Trout Well
A Haven of Water, Nature, and Memory in the Blue Mountains of Mação
Located within the Poço Mourão area, at the lower end of this enchanting valley, Trout Well is one of the most beautiful natural corners of the parish of Amêndoa. Surrounded by the tranquillity of the stream and the vegetation that lines its banks, this site offers visitors a setting of remarkable beauty, where water takes centre stage.
Over the centuries, the power of the flowing stream was harnessed by local communities to operate the old watermills, structures that played a vital role in grinding the cereals produced throughout the region. Today, the remains of these former mills can still be seen, standing as silent witnesses to a rural economy that sustained generations of local inhabitants.
🌊 The constant sound of running water, the small waterfalls, and the natural pools formed along the stream create an atmosphere of peace and freshness, particularly appreciated during the warmer months of the year. The landscape inspires contemplation and provides insight into the close relationship that once existed between local communities and the natural resources of this territory.
🌿 Set within the Blue Mountains of Mação, Poço das Trutas benefits from a well-preserved natural environment, where woodlands, rocky outcrops, and watercourses combine to create a landscape of exceptional ecological and scenic value.
🚶 One of the most distinctive features of this location is the pedestrian bridge crossing the stream, which allows walkers on the PR6 – Amêndoa Route to continue their journey along the left bank. This crossing is one of the highlights of the trail, offering excellent opportunities to observe nature and appreciate the beauty of the valley.
✨ Closely linked to the legends of nearby Poço Mourão and the rich heritage of the parish of Amêndoa, Poço das Trutas is a place where nature, history, and tradition come together.
