🚒 Mação Volunteer Fire Brigade
The Mação Volunteer Fire Brigade is one of the most important humanitarian institutions in the municipality of Mação, playing a fundamental role in protecting people, property, and natural heritage. Throughout decades of service to the community, the brigade has been a pillar of safety and emergency response, handling fires, accidents, medical emergencies, natural disasters, and other civil protection incidents.
📜 History and Foundation
The Humanitarian Association of the Mação Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded on 14 August 1937, reflecting the solidarity and civic commitment of the local population towards the protection of their community.
Since then, the brigade has continuously adapted to the evolving needs of the municipality, modernising its equipment, facilities, and operational procedures while preserving the values of dedication, altruism, and volunteerism that inspired its creation.
🏛️ Evolution of the Facilities
Throughout its history, the Mação Volunteer Fire Brigade has operated from different facilities as the organisation expanded and its responsibilities increased.
For many years, the brigade headquarters occupied the building that today houses the Abrantes branch of CRIA (Centro de Recuperação e Integração de Abrantes). This building remains in the memory of many local residents as the former fire station and a significant landmark in the history of emergency services in Mação.
In 2013, the current fire station was inaugurated, providing the brigade with a modern and functional facility that had been awaited for nearly two decades. The building was named Manuel Gaudêncio Correia and Francisco José Lopes Fire Station, honouring two figures whose dedication and leadership left a lasting mark on the history of the brigade and of the municipality.
📍 Location
Located on Rua das Encruzilhadas, at Largo dos Bombeiros Voluntários, in Mação, the fire station is strategically positioned to ensure a rapid response across the entire municipality.
🎯 Mission and Areas of Operation
The Mação Volunteer Fire Brigade carries out a broad range of emergency, rescue, and prevention activities.
🔥 Firefighting
The brigade responds to urban, industrial, rural, and wildland fires, operating within the Portuguese National Emergency and Civil Protection System.
🚑 Pre-Hospital Emergency Care
Emergency teams provide first aid, victim stabilisation, and medical transport, working in coordination with the National Institute for Medical Emergencies (INEM) and other healthcare entities.
🌊 Rescue Operations
Firefighters are also involved in search and rescue missions, road traffic accidents, floods, water-related incidents, and other emergency situations requiring specialised intervention.
🧯 Prevention and Public Awareness
The institution regularly promotes awareness campaigns and educational initiatives aimed at schools, associations, businesses, and the general public, encouraging safe behaviours and reducing the risk of accidents and fires.
📋 Civil Protection and Safety
The brigade collaborates in civil protection activities, emergency planning, and the provision of technical advice related to fire safety and risk prevention.
🚒 Equipment and Operational Capacity
Over recent years, the brigade has significantly strengthened its operational capabilities through the acquisition and renewal of specialised vehicles and equipment. These include wildland firefighting vehicles, water tenders, rescue units, and extrication equipment, enabling a highly effective response to the challenges posed by the region.
🌲 Serving a Demanding Territory
The municipality of Mação is located within a predominantly forested region that has historically experienced major wildfires. This reality gives the Mação Volunteer Fire Brigade a particularly important role in protecting both the local population and the surrounding natural environment.
The brigade is part of a wider network of organisations that have helped make Mação a national reference in wildfire prevention and risk management through innovative monitoring, surveillance, and landscape management initiatives.
❤️ A Community Institution
More than just an emergency service, the Mação Volunteer Fire Brigade represents dedication, courage, and solidarity. For generations, men and women have volunteered their time and effort in service to the community, placing the common good above personal interests.
Its history is deeply intertwined with that of the municipality itself, making the brigade an invaluable human heritage institution that continues every day to uphold its mission of serving, protecting, and saving lives. 🚒
