Path

Developed mainly along rural and forest tracks, this is a circular path of approximately 8 km with a low level of difficulty, making it ideal for families, occasional walkers, and anyone seeking to discover the authentic beauty of the Cardigos landscapes in a relaxed and accessible way.

The Cardigos River Beach, one of the most popular and attractive river beaches in the Médio Tejo region, marks both the beginning and the end of the trail. Surrounded by stunning natural scenery, it provides the perfect setting for rest and relaxation and is, for many visitors, the highlight of the experience. On warmer days, there is no better way to conclude the walk than with a refreshing swim or a peaceful moment by the water.

Along the route, visitors will encounter several points of interest that showcase the natural and cultural heritage of the parish. The trail passes through the historic centre of Cardigos, traditional village fountains and preserved rural landscapes, where nature, agriculture, and local life have coexisted harmoniously for generations.

Between green valleys, peaceful woodlands and cultivated fields shaped by human hands over centuries, the trail reveals hidden corners of remarkable beauty and provides an authentic experience of a territory where life still moves at a gentler pace.

Natural Heritage

The hills surrounding Cardigos are covered by extensive areas of maritime pine forest, which for centuries played a fundamental role in the local economy and way of life. These woodlands support a rich biodiversity, including delicate wild orchids and several species of mushrooms, notably the fly agaric (Amanita muscaria), the common stinkhorn (Phallus impudicus), and the highly prized saffron milk cap (Lactarius deliciosus).

In the clearings and flower-rich areas of the trail, visitors may observe important pollinators such as the carpenter bee and the buff-tailed bumblebee (Bombus terrestris), both essential for maintaining the ecological balance of the region.

The quieter sections of the route are also a haven for birdlife, including the white wagtail, Eurasian jay, common cuckoo, and grey wagtail. As dusk falls, the landscape takes on a different character, becoming home to several nocturnal birds of prey, including the barn owl, tawny owl, and little owl.

Cultural Heritage

The genuine and well-preserved landscapes of Cardigos reflect centuries of history, tradition, and a strong connection between the local people and their land.

At the heart of the village stand the Parish Church and its welcoming central square, which continue to be important gathering places for the community. On the outskirts, the Vergancinho Dam enhances the landscape and provides a pleasant setting for contemplation and relaxation.

Beyond its recreational value, the Cardigos River Beach has become one of the parish’s most important landmarks, helping to establish Cardigos as a destination of excellence for nature tourism within the Municipality of Mação.

In the surrounding villages, particularly Roda, visitors can discover the Fonte Fundeira and the old Public Washhouse, reminders of the vital role that water once played in daily rural life. The trail also passes by the unique Roman Fountain of Chão do Pião, one of the route’s most remarkable heritage features, evoking ancient memories and enriching the visitor experience.

The Cardigos–Praia Route is an invitation to discover authentic landscapes, preserved heritage, and living traditions, offering an experience where nature, history, and well-being come together in a memorable walk through the heart of the Municipality of Mação. More than a hiking trail, it is a journey through the senses, local identity, and the beauty of a territory that inspires visitors to return.

More than a trail, a journey through the authentic heart of Cardigos.
